Movie 175/1001 ~ The Phantom of the Opera

This is a silent film from 1925 starring Lon Chaney, who was a star of that era. Lon Chaney's excellent acting and his own makeup add greatly to the film. The film follows the premise of the book, in which the Phantom, who is horribly disfigured, falls in love with the beautiful Christine, and wreaks havoc at the Paris Opera House. I happened to see this movie with a live organ accompaniment, which was very cool. The seating was uncomfortable, but the film is a classic that deservedly passes the test of time, and was made much better by the live organ at its side. A good movie.

***1/2
